Copper Mountain Community Church (CMCC) is a community that is dedicated to the Guests, Homeowners and Staff of the Copper Mountain Ski Resort.

CMCC has a cookie ministry and provides free employee meals. Whenever the lifts are running, in summer or winter, homemade cookies are given out to the employees throughout the mountain. Over 300 bags of cookies are given out every Sunday. A free employee meal is provided for all employees once a month during ski season. Church members cook and serve the meal in the Chapel community room. Over 300 meals have been served monthly. We have a wonderful family of homeowners and second homeowners who help and serve the Lord.

If you would like to be involved in this ministry, either by attending our services, serving the Copper Mountain staff, or through giving, please contact us!

Purpose Statement:

CMCC is a joyful Christian community in love with Jesus. Our stimulating worship events give participants the opportunity to experience the love of Christ, to hear sound biblical teaching and to praise God in a friendly atmosphere. Our unwavering love for Christ and His compassion for all people creates opportunities to share Christ through community service to Copper Mountain and the Summit county area. We give to and participate in local and global outreach ministries. We are dedicated to Christian growth through Bible studies, mentoring and educational opportunities. We are a friendly, caring, accepting community. We encourage and support one another, meet socially and welcome all people. We converse with God through Jesus Christ by giving praise, offering thanks and seeking His will for us personally, for our church, and for the whole Summit County Community.

History:

CMCC is part of the Alpine Resort Ministries that was started by Steve Hoekstra about 20 years ago. We are a part of a group that has mountain ministries throughout Colorado. Vail was the first location of the mountain ministries followed by Copper Mountain. There are now ministries from Winter Park, Steamboat Springs all the way to Durango and everywhere else in between.

Around 1960 Copper Mountain began to be noticed for its potential as a ski resort. In 1972 Copper Mountain was officially dedicated and was termed “the most nearly perfect ski mountain in the United States” by the U.S. Forest Service. Skiing continues as the major attraction today along with other tourist attractions and conference opportunities.

CMCC was constituted in 1989. A small group of Christians meeting at the Copper Mountain Chapel agreed that the Lord wanted them to establish a body of believers in this area. They further agreed to work in cooperation with the High Country Baptist Association, Colorado Baptist General Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention. Franklin Walter, Leslie Kite, Vlasta Bovee and Timothy Clark, pastor, were involved in setting up the original church constitution. Pastor Clark left CMCC a couple of years later.

Jon Halverson agreed to serve as an interim pastor during this time. Jon was serving as an assistant to the president of the Navigators in Colorado Springs. He would drive up from the Springs to conduct the morning service at the Chapel and preach at the mountain top service. On those Sundays he was unable to attend, his good friend and mountain climbing partner, John Pavey, would fill in.

After Jon, Mark Smith served as Pastor for a couple of years until he and his family moved to Granby, Colorado. Following Mark there were a few interim pastors including Pete Owen, the DOM of the High Country Baptist Association. Robert “Dub” Chambers was hired as a bi-vocational pastor in 1994. During Dub’s time here, our church moved from the High Country Baptist Association to the Continental Divide Association. Dub and his wife, Pat, moved to the Crossroads Baptist Church in Poncha Springs, Colorado, in 2002. In 2003 we called Pete Owen to be a bi-vocational pastor. Pete and his wife, Pat, developed medical problems, and they returned to Tennessee late in 2003. Loren “Stinky” Steinbrink agreed to serve as interim pastor in 2003, and he holds that position now. Stinky has many able helpers. His wife, Karen, leads the chapel worship service, and Dale Holland leads the mountain top service. Dale’s wife, Cheryl, helps with the meals and cookie ministry, and Frank Walter helps with the cookies and the meals.
